Freestanding picture frame for the windowsill, where the light shines through

A windowsill is the most difficult place for a picture frame: everything faces away from the light, so a solid frame becomes a silhouette and the photo disappears into the shadows. Transparent acrylic handles this differently. Light comes through the coloured edge from behind and brings the frame to life, while the photo appears to be illuminated from within. The same frame can also stand on a desk or sideboard, or be hung on the wall.

The design

• Can be used standing or hanging: one frame for both placements, so you can still change your mind later.
• Coloured transparent acrylic: the material lets backlighting through instead of blocking it.
• Five frame sizes: 11 x 14, 15 x 19, 16 x 21 (A5), 21 x 30 and 26 x 35 cm (A4).
• Matching photo sizes: 6 x 9, 10 x 14, 11 x 16, 16 x 25 and 21 x 30 cm — the frame is more spacious than the print in both directions.
• Minimalist, Scandinavian design: no profile or mat to draw attention away from the photo.
• Lightweight material: on a narrow windowsill, acrylic is more stable than a heavy glass frame.

Setting it up on a windowsill

Place the smaller sizes at the front and the larger ones behind them, so you look past them rather than straight at them. The 11 by 14 cm size is about as tall as a coffee mug and fits on the narrowest sill; the 15 by 19 cm size is designed for a standard 10 by 14 print and looks good on almost any windowsill. Keep the frame a few centimetres away from the glass so condensation does not collect against it. In direct, prolonged sunlight, every print will fade over time — this applies here too, so it is better to use a copy than the only print you have of something.
