A skull that lights up among your borders in the evening

This garden decoration consists of a bleached-white plastic skull with a black raven perched on top. Inside the skull is a single LED light that emits a warm amber glow through the eye sockets, nostrils, and between the teeth after sunset. The whole piece stands on a short ground stake with a small four-by-four-centimetre solar panel on the side. Push the stake into the soil, make sure the panel receives sunlight, and at the end of the day the skull will begin to glow automatically. What to expect - and not expect - from the light output

• It marks a path; it does not illuminate it: what you see is a floating amber-coloured face that you can make out from across your garden. Do not expect light on the ground itself.
• Place it for visual appeal, not functional lighting: if you actually need light to walk safely in the evening, choose a more powerful outdoor light and place this skull beside it as decoration.
• Runtime depends on the weather: the manufacturer claims six to eight hours of light after a full charge, but that only applies with direct sunlight, a new battery, and ideal conditions. On a cloudy day in October, or in the shade of a hedge, you will get less - and even less as winter progresses.
• Location matters more than you might think: choose a spot with as much direct sunlight as possible throughout the day. Keep the panel clear of leaves, do not leave it in the skull's own shadow, and wipe away dust and raindrops from time to time. If you store the light for eleven months, preferably keep it charged rather than empty.

Designed for seasonal decoration in sheltered corners

This garden ornament is intended to stay outdoors for one autumn, not to face the elements unprotected year after year. The manufacturer provides conflicting information about its water resistance - the packaging and specifications list different IP ratings, so we will not repeat either one. What is clear is that it is a moulded plastic skull containing a battery, a sensor, and a panel inside a housing that is not designed to be opened. Do not leave it standing in a puddle or beneath a downspout, do not submerge it, and bring it indoors before frost and thaw begin. That way, it will last for several seasons instead of just one.

The ground stake is made of plastic and supports the full weight of the skull and raven - so it is top-heavy. To prevent the stake from breaking or the ornament from ending up flat on the lawn after a windy night, follow this approach: wet the soil first if it is dry or rock-hard, make a pilot hole with a screwdriver or bamboo stick, push the stake in instead of hammering it, never twist it sideways to straighten it, and push it deeper than you think necessary. Keep it out of the windiest corner of your garden.
