Security camera with night vision: twelve infrared lenses instead of two

A camera without proper night vision is a daytime camera, and most of what you worry about does not happen in broad daylight. The number of infrared lenses determines how far and how evenly the camera illuminates a dark space. This one has twelve, which is a lot for a device of this size - and the difference is visible at the edges of the image, where one or two lenses let the darkness creep in.

The specifications that determine the night-time image

• Night vision with 12 infrared lenses: more even illumination of a dark space than with a camera featuring a single IR LED.
• 1080P Full HD: enough resolution to distinguish shapes and movement in the dark.
• 150-degree viewing angle: a wide image, allowing the infrared light to be distributed across a broad angle.
• Motion detection with automatic recording: at night, recording starts as soon as something moves, instead of capturing eight hours of darkness.
• WiFi IEEE 802.11b/g/n: live viewing on a standard home network.
• Loop recording, micro SD up to 128 GB: available with a 32, 64, or 128 GB card, or as a camera only.

Making night vision work properly

Infrared light reflects off glass. So do not place the camera behind a window or glass cabinet door, as it will mainly record its own reflected light. Also keep the first half metre in front of the lens clear: a vase or book spine nearby will be brightly illuminated and make the rest of the image appear dark. The camera has a diameter of 3.5 cm, so it can sit on a shelf or cabinet without drawing attention. This product is intended for monitoring your own home or space; recording others without their knowledge is subject to legal restrictions.
