Thin-walled crystal, not pressed glass

The difference between a five-euro glass and one you actually want to drink from comes down to the rim. Thin-walled crystal glass has a rim you can barely feel, so the wine or champagne flows over your lips instead of over a thick glass rim. Pressed glass, by contrast, is always too thick at the top. Caring for thin-walled crystal

Thin-walled crystal should be hand-washed: use lukewarm water and mild soap, and avoid harsh dishwasher detergents, which can dull the shine over time. Dry the glasses with a linen cloth instead of leaving them to drip-dry, as limescale marks look especially unsightly on a thin rim. Hold the glass by the stem as you dry it, and don’t twist the cloth forcefully inside the bowl - that’s how thin stems break. Store them upright in the cupboard, not resting on the rim; a thin rim is the glass’s weakest point. For champagne, choose the smaller 390 or 440 ml sizes to preserve the bubbles; for wine, choose 530 or 760 ml.
